(I assure you there are wind turbines in the background but you cannot see them)
The smoke in this picture of Central Illinois is from hundreds of miles away in Canada. Air quality is so bad that children, and people with heart and lung problems are advised to stay indoors. Sporting events are canceled, along with club rides and more.
Last night I didn’t know about it, and went riding and my throat was burning, lungs rebelling, and I didn’t sleep well. Today I found out about the air quality advisory and, being an idiot, naturally thought; “I’ve got to go get a picture of that!”
(But I did wear an N95. Though it helped my throat is a bit sore.)
My son lives in California, where wildfires are making home insurance difficult to get. He’s had days where the bay area looked like a scene from an apocalyptic movie.
Global warming isn’t something that’s maybe-in-the-future, it’s HERE. And it isn’t leveling off either. Denialists are making all kinds of excuses but, well, they’re wrong.
Bill Nye explains it pretty well:
- A study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association found that wildfire particulates massively increased the risk of heart attacks: “Out‐of‐Hospital Cardiac Arrests and Wildfire‐Related Particulate Matter During 2015–2017 California Wildfires“
- The American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology has a similar warning for anyone who suffers from asthma: Experts Urge Those with Asthma to Protect Against Smoke from Wildfires
- Eunice Newton Foote demonstrated that CO2 is a greenhouse gas in 1856
