I have too many DVDs and Blu-Rays, that’s a fact, but… I hate streaming. Artists create, then some company pulls the whole series because of some argument over residuals or something. That’s every platform; they’re all evil. And the Balkanized entertainment universe has sort of reinvented cable.
Anyway, I signed up for Disney+ because there were specific things I wanted to watch. A couple animated classics, some new animated films and series. DuckTales 2017 (which was even better than the original.) And… The Owl House, which was simply wonderful but gone too soon because Disney is scared of gay stuff.
But lately there hasn’t been much. Pixar has been trying to figure out what to do now. I like Star Wars but – there’s just so much of it. Also a bunch of Marvel superheroes I really don’t care about. Where’s the cutting-edge animated storytelling?
I signed up for Netflix, honestly, to watch Don’t Look Up, and it was great. But that sub is still paying off. We’ve seen some great Japanese and Korean TV and animation (and no, Netflix is not properly paying their artists either). She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, which was five seasons of pure awesome and I want a Blu-Ray box set if it existed. And lately Nimona (also from the mind of N.D. Stevenson) just blew me away.
We’ve seen lots of good stuff on Amazon prime as well – they have quite a bit of anime, some good series. Bosch was excellent. Some good original movies like The Aeronauts. (Prime is also evil, though)
But if your streaming platform decides to delete something, then POOF! it’s gone. Diane loved watching Schitt’s Creek, and now it’s basically gone. And Paramount+ didn’t just cancel Prodigy; they erased it from existence. Sorry, artists and voice actors and so on…
I’ve thought about Paramount+ so I can watch Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (in particular the musical episode, which is right down my alley). But as much as I love Trek, I don’t necessarily want to swim laps in it.
Hmm…
